Awesome Autumnal Equinox — September 23rd 2019

The temperature in New England has changed, the nights are cooler and the days can be chilly with a crisp bite — much like the plethora of apples that are being picked at local farms. The new Macs, Delicious, Golden, Honeycrisp, and Gala apples are a sure sign of the coming of Autumn. The leaves are just starting to change, the pumpkins are showing up in rows on the farms, a myriad of squashes are arriving in the markets, acorn, butternut, not to mention the extra zucchini’s from our neighbors and friends. We here in New England relish the change of seasons — each marking a turning point in our yearly traditions and celebrations.

The Autumnal Equinox has ever been a time of plenty — a good harvest, a successful Summer of hard work and agreeable weather, have helped to bring the produce our ancestors needed so intensely in order to get through the severe Winters. Harvesting their crops, and preparing them to last throughout the bitter months ahead, their larders were filled to the brim with potatoes, squash, corn in the silos, jars of jellies and jams, pickled cucumbers and relishes, all prepared with a loving hand.

Neighbors shared their excess with others, so that all would have a variety of foodstuffs ready to prepare. Community was the essence of survival and commitment to one another. When there was illness, sorrow, anxiety or grief — they came together to mourn — conversely, when there was joy, a birth, a wedding, an anniversary — all would join together to celebrate and rejoice. A simpler time perhaps, but that source of our strength to get through any adversity was easier when shared. Today, we see the awesome response to those who are suffering, whether because of disaster, tragedy, adversity or failure — our Global Community responds with necessary items, foodstuffs and money.

Our communities today aren’t like those of a Century ago — still — I believe that there is always that core of humanity that will answer the call when our fellow brethren are in need. The Autumnal Equinox is a time when we are reminded that we should share our bounty. The Sun enters the sign Libra on the 23rd this year, bringing the beauty of Nature’s Autumn Glory, and reminding us that we need to appreciate where we are in life. Also, Libra enjoys balance — the ability to see both sides of a situation, to be grateful for all the good things in our life, to realize the love we engender, and the love we garner from others. This is a time to look back to see how far we have come in this lifetime, to realize what enriches our spirit, and to be thankful for our families, our friends and our mentors.

Now is that moment in time to give thanks for our blessings, for those who enrich our lives, for our miraculous gift of humanity, and for that immeasurable divine spark that nourishes our soul.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

Peace
